๐Ÿ‘‰ 90% of "HDD not working" cases are actually a Power Supply issue โ€” not a faulty hard disk!

Did you know? A new surveillance hard disk requires adequate and stable power supply to spin up and get detected by your DVR/NVR. If your DVR/NVR adapter is weak, old, or incompatible โ€” the hard disk will NOT be detected even if it is perfectly fine. This is a very common issue reported by CCTV installers across India.

Check Your DVR/NVR Power Adapter

Make sure your DVR/NVR is using the original power adapter that came with it. A DVR without HDD typically uses 10โ€“15 Watts. With HDD installed, it needs 30โ€“48 Watts. If your adapter is weak or old, it may not provide enough power for the HDD to spin up.

Replace or Swap the Power Adapter

Try replacing your DVR/NVR power adapter with a new 12V adapter with higher amperage (2Aโ€“4A). Many users have reported that simply changing the adapter solved the "HDD not detected" problem immediately. If you have a camera adapter with the same specs, try swapping it temporarily to test.

Check SATA Data Cable and Power Cable

Open the DVR/NVR cover and check that both the SATA data cable and power cable are firmly connected to the hard disk. Loose cables are a very common cause of HDD not being detected. Unplug and firmly re-plug both cables.

Touch the HDD After 1 Minute

After powering on, wait 1 minute and touch the hard disk with your hand. If it is slightly warm and you can hear a faint spin sound โ€” HDD is getting power and working. If it is completely cold and silent โ€” HDD is NOT receiving power. This confirms it is a power supply issue.

Test HDD on Another DVR or Computer

If possible, remove the HDD and connect it to another DVR/NVR or a desktop computer via SATA. If it gets detected on another system โ€” the problem is with your DVR's power supply, not the HDD. Only if HDD is not detected on any system should you proceed with a warranty claim.

Format the HDD from DVR Settings

A brand new HDD needs to be formatted from the DVR/NVR settings before it can record. Go to: DVR Settings โ†’ Storage โ†’ HDD Management โ†’ Format. Most DVRs will beep continuously after detecting a new HDD โ€” this is normal and means you need to format it.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: If your DVR shows "HDD Not Exist" or "No HDD" after a power cut or voltage fluctuation โ€” try unplugging the DVR completely, wait 30 seconds, reconnect the HDD cables firmly, and power on again. Power surges can cause the DVR to lose HDD detection temporarily. Using a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) with your DVR is strongly recommended to avoid such issues.
